Turn on Instagram messages for Auto DM

Instagram refuses every Auto DM until Allow access to messages is on in the Instagram app. Where the switch is, and why we ask you to check it.

Auto DM sends your link on Instagram as a message from your account. Instagram only lets a connected app like EverySqueeze do that while Allow access to messages is on in your Instagram settings. With it off, Instagram refuses every Auto DM, and reconnecting Instagram or Facebook doesn't change it.

Instagram DM not sending: turn on Allow access to messages

In the Instagram app on your phone:

  1. Open your profile, tap the menu, then Settings and activity.
  2. Tap Messages and story replies, then Message requests, then Connected tools.
  3. Turn on Allow access to messages.

The next comment with your trigger word gets its DM.

Why we ask you to check it

Instagram doesn't tell EverySqueeze whether Allow access to messages is on. We only find out when Instagram refuses a DM. So where it is on for your account, EverySqueeze asks you to check it at the moments it matters:

"Did it" is saved for your account, so the reminder stops on every device. It doesn't check the switch for you: Instagram doesn't let us. "Not now" hides it until you next open EverySqueeze.

If Instagram refuses a DM

Where it is on for your account, the first time Instagram refuses an Auto DM because this switch is off, the notifications bell (and Needs attention on Home) says Instagram is blocking Auto DM with these steps and a video, and we send you one email about it. The bell message goes away by itself once a DM goes through. You get at most one of these emails a week. Settings → Auto DM also says Instagram is blocking DMs. More causes are in Auto DM isn't sending.
